Development of new projects in the southern sector of the North Field. Upon completion of this project, expected between 2023 and 2024, these developments are expected to increase LNG capacity in Qatar from 77 million tonnes per year to 110 million tonnes per year. ► To what extent do you expect the globalization of the gas market to affect traditional gas producers? ► LNG has played a major role in the development of global natural gas trading. In the early 1990s, there were only nine LNG producing countries and only eight importers; by 2017, that number had risen to 18 exporting countries and 37 importers. In 2017, the total volume of imported LNG reached 290 million tons, with 27% providing on an immediate or short-term basis. The increase in this trade reflects broader changes in the market, providing greater flexibility for customers. Our geographical location provides markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas, with greater potential for weighting and choice among the three markets. New LNG projects are still capital-intensive, requiring third-party financing, and as customers continue to assess the safety of supply, long-term contracts should continue to dominate the industry. The only difference is that the average duration of these contracts has been reduced from 25 to 20 years in the past to 10-15 years currently; producers also offer greater flexibility with regard to key conditions, including size, seasonality and destination.
