AAI stands for the Airports Authority of India. It works under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and is established on 1st April 1995. The major functions of AAI are building, managing and upgrading domestic and international airports, and constructing civil enclaves in the country. AAI also provides Air Traffic Management Services in the Indian air space and the surrounding ocean area that comes under the Indian Territory. AAI has set up ground installations at all the airports and 25 other locations for this purpose.
At present, AAI operates around 18 international airports, 78 domestic airports, 7 customs airports, and 26 civil enclaves, which make a total of 125 airports. It has also entered into joint ventures with private players to modernize the airports at Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, etc.
