1. Purpose of the Data CollectionTo design interventions thattarget the major challenges and constraints of basic education and primarylearning poverty in Burkina Faso within the framework of the REPAIR project, data from primary schools are needed. This data will cover the presence ofteachers in the classrooms, the time spent on teaching, pedagogical practices, the availability of teaching and learning materials, the ability of students ingrades 2, 3 and 4 (CP, CE1 and CE2) in reading and mathematics and the language(s)of instruction. Three data collection instruments will be used: (i) a survey inprimary schools (grades 2-3-4); (ii) focus group discussions with educationstakeholders, and (iii) a survey of the population of children who are out ofschool.(i) Data willbe collected from a sample of 75 primary schools (accessible schools) on thefollowing indicators: i. Attendance of teachers and students; ii. Availability and use of textbooks, teacherguides and other basic teaching and learning materials; iii. Student learning levels in reading, includingreceptive and expressive oral language in reading and mathematics; iv. Student learning levels in mathematics, in linewith curriculum requirements for the relevant grade (2, 3, 4); v. Time allocated to teaching subjects, particularlyreading and mathematics; vi. The language used in teaching practices ofsample schools; vii. Teacher evaluation practices (formative, summative, questioning techniques); viii. Teacher training and support practices and otherkey data (e.g., sanitary conditions, access to water, whether school canteensexist) ix. Common teaching approaches (rote learning, grouplearning, classroom set up, and other elements that may be considered relevantto understanding the learning environment)(ii) Focus-group discussions with differentstakeholders involved in primary school education, notably primary schoolteachers, primary school directors, inspectors, and parents of students, andselect members of the School Man...
