For over a decade, the FAO and its partners have been working together to keep the world safe from infectious diseases, through timely and good-quality information about disease reservoirs and outbreaks that support decision making for disease prevention and response. To meet this goal, the FAO organizes and implements several capacity development activities to strengthen surveillance systems of animal diseases within countries. Mapping diseases, risk factors and livestock infrastructure using a Geographical Information System (GIS) have become game-changers in surveillance systems since they allow veterinary and public health services to understand and explain the dynamics and patterns of disease occurrence or spread that can be correlated to disease trends and the early warning system. GIS mapping and analysis also provide support for risk-based surveillance program design and implementation. This is crucial to identify areas at high risk of introduction, spillover, and spread of priority zoonotic diseases (PZDs) to inform decision-makers and enable cost-effective resource allocation in animal health.
