DBS 2 1 1 years
DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) is a scientifically well-documented method for the treatment of several neurological conditions, mainly movement disorders. The neurosurgery department, Karolinska University Hospital, annually carries out the implantation of 40-50 new complete DBS systems as well asmany procedures aimed at replacing components that were previously operated on, mainly IPGs (Implantable Pulse Generators). The majority of the implanted systems are done on adult patients. Only in rare cases is implantation done in children.
The DBS systems consist of electrodes, which are inserted with stereo pacingical technology in the brain (usually one or two electrodes/patient, in rare cases four electrodes/patient), one (or more) impulse generators (IPG), for power supply to the electrode and usually connection cables between electrode and IPG.
