Tenders are invited for The DAERA Marine Conservation and Reporting Team is seeking tenders to supply long term acoustic tracking equipment to be deployed on a range of priority elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) play a vital role in regulating healthy marine ecosystems. Over the past 50 years, their abundance has drastically declined to a point where some species are now critically endangered e.g., flapper skate. Given the sensitive life history characteristics of elasmobranchs such as slow growth, late age at maturity, low fecundity, and low intrinsic potential to recover from certain pressures such as fishing, it is now imperative to implement a managed conservation strategy in Northern Ireland. Purchasing acoustic tracking equipment is essential for progressing the Northern Ireland elasmobranch conservation strategy, allowing for delivery Departmental business plan objectives.
