The University of the Bundeswehr Munich (client) was founded in 1973 at the request of the then Federal Minister of Defense, Helmut Schmidt, under the name "Bundeswehr University Munich". It is one of two universities that the Bundeswehr uses to train its officer candidatesand young officers. The university belongs to the civilian organizational area of human resources and is assigned to the Federal Ministry of Defense.
On August 11, 2020, UniBw M founded a new "Center for Digitalization and Technology Research of the Bundeswehr" (dtec.bw for short). dtec.bw isPart of the federal government's economic stimulus program to overcome the COVID-19 crisis and is being provided with research funds from the economic stimulus program via the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg). With its inclusion in the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (DARP), dtec.bw is run by dThe European Union - NextGenerationEU finances it. The research project "Seamless Radio Access Networks for Internet of Space" (SeRANIS) has been approved by the BMVg and is now to be implemented. As part of SeRANIS, an experimental satellite is to be created in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The SeR projectANIS is funded by dtec.bw.
