BACKGROUNDThe Food and Drug Administration has a requirement for Dosimetry service for occupational radiation monitoring, area radiation monitoring, emergency response and other specialized services. The Dosimetry program monitors occupation radiation exposure for Office of Inspections and Investigations (OII), Office of Specialty Laboratories and Enforcement Support (OSLES), Office of Analytical and Regulatory Laboratories (OARL), and eight Human Foods Program Office of Regulatory Testing and Surveillance (HFP ORTS) labs. The Dosimetry program monitors occupation radiation exposure for personnel through whole body and may include wrist and ring badges (the latter dependent upon the position). This program is administered and managed by the FDA/OC/OCS/OSLA/ROSS Radiation Safety Officer and other designated personnel under the auspices of FDA/OC/OCS/OSLA/ROSS. This service helps to ensure that Employees radiation recorded doses remain below Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Occupational Safety and Health Administration occupations exposure limits.

The exposure information carried on these units does not fade over time. These units are also heat resistant, while having high sensitivity. For ring badges, another technology may be used (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter (TLD)), since OSL technology does not yet exist for this type of dosimeter. Whole Body (chest), and wrist dosimeters shall have Optical...
