Tenders are invited for Earth-Code: Earth Science Collaborative Open Development Environment

EarthCODE develops a collaborative, cloud based, community-centric scientific development environment for relevant ESA science activities and projects, especially those of the ESA Science for Society programme and its Science Clusters (e.g., Polar, Carbon, Atmosphere, Ocean, etc.). EarthCODE-s advanced open science environment will be a long-term ESA offering for such projects and scientists to help them adhere to FAIR Open Science practices in their research activities and ensure persistence, dissemination and reuse of the scientific outcomes (data, code, methods, etc.) by the wider community. EarthCODE will be developed as an open architecture, using open-source building blocks and integrating commercial platform services (for EO data, processing, storage, etc.), offering an effective, efficient and attractive environment to conduct Earth System Science collaboratively. Scientists will be provided with convenient means to: conduct their science in a cloud environment, discover research (data, code, documentation, etc.) published by other scientists, manage their research projects including end-to-end scientific experiments, publish their results, and interact with the community. The overall objective of this tender is to select subcontractors under the ESA Activity “Earth Science Collaborative Open Development Environment (EarthCODE)” (Prime Contractor: Telespazio UK Ltd), to develop three main works streams (WS): WS1. Infrastructure, WS2. FAIR Open Science & WS3. Community. WS1. Infrastructure Platform will provide the necessary computational resources to support the development and execution of scientific research, by integrating existing cloud and platform services (primarily from the NoR offering). WS2. FAIR Open Science Platform will provide the necessary tools and means for researchers to develop and manage their scientific research in full compliance with FAIR and Open Science principles. WS3. Community Platform will provide the necessary means for managing the EarthCODE community (including the developers, contributors, and users). Further preliminary information is provided in the Earth Science Collaborative Open Development Environment (EarthCODE) Statement of Work, reference E SA-EOP-SD-SOW-0418. This tender will be conducted in line with the “ESA Best Practices for the Selection of Subcontractors by Prime Contractors in the frame of ESA-s Major Procurements” (reference ESA BEST PRACTICES IPC(2012)65, rev.2). Tenderers may bid for 1 or more of the Work Streams. A virtual ‘open day- briefing will be organised (further details to be announced on ESA News), giving more information about the EarthCODE ITT shortly before its publication.
