Population health outcomes have improved over the past two decades, but Armenia faces a growing NCD burden. In 2019, the life expectancy at birth was 76.5 years, rising from 68 years in 1990. However, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, life expectancy dropped by 3.2 years to 73.5 in 2020. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now cause 75 percent of deaths and significantly explain the gap between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy of 67.1 years in 2019. In addition, these conditions - including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and diabetes - cost the Armenian economy over 360 billion AMD every year due to losses in workforce productivity and the cost of care. Up to 9, 834 annual lost years of life per 100, 000 people annually can be prevented through effective public policies and improved access to high-quality care in Armenia.
