Title: Evaluation to Dead Weight Machine
BACKGROUND
NIST has maintained and operated six (6) deadweight machines (DWM-s) since 1965. Thousands of measurements, through countless force calibrations, have been performed over the lifespan of these machines. Our second largest machine has developed a problem with the compression platen positioning system and will need to be disassembled to further investigate the problem and determine a repair (separate procurement). After a proper repair, the platen will need reassembled.
Technical Specifications:
Disassemble guide rods from lifting structure (4) (all guide rods properly marked for matched reassembly later)
Remove coupler that connects guide rods and threaded rods (4) (all couplers properly marked for matched reassembly later)
Block up (cribbing or whatever is most proper) the motor and drive gear train assembly and remove the connections to the platen
Lower the drive gear assembly as far as possible with final resting spot being blocked across the floor opening.
After raising the platen (this done by force staff), the platen will then need to be blocked up securely (again cribbing or whatever is most proper) spanning the hole opening as well.
4 large nuts that hold the drive nut in place need loosened and spun up the threaded rods to allow room for the platen to be lowered. A specialized wrench may need to be made or procured.
Platen can be lowered (by Force group staff) and the drive nuts will drop out of the platen (still attached to the threaded rods).
The drive nuts then would need marked for proper reassembly and then removed from the threaded shafts by spinning to the bottom by hand and removed at the gap that is now between the drive gear assembly and the threaded rods.
The problem...
