Marine Sediments (especially Schlickböden) store about twice as much carbon as terrestrial floors at their first meter depth. Schelfmere such as the North and the Baltic Sea are hotspots for enrichment. If the sediments remain undisturbed, carbon can be saved for thousands to millions of years. With a view to the development of coastal, basic towing fishing as well as oil and gas exploration and bores and laying of sea cables, sediments remain less and less undisturbed. If sediments are whirled up by appropriate uses, greenhouse gases can be released that have long been bound in the sediment. As a contribution to natural climate protection and the preservation of biological diversity, these particularly carbon -rich areas should be preserved. So far, however, there is no legal option in Germany under the existing regulations (including Natura 2000 guidelines, marine strategy framework directive, Federal Nature Conservation Act, spatial planning plans, etc.). In addition, the restoration of corresponding areas in the light of the EU regulation for the restoration of nature is important. Dah ...
