Project Description: The Authority is looking to understand the performance available from submarine fibre optic based sensing for acoustic monitoring of the underwater environment. The potential benefits of fibre optic based sensing, including distributed acoustic sensing, have been investigated and reported for several applications but have not been assessed rigorously. Consequently, there is a requirement to define, measure and quantify the performance for different technologies, such as point and distributed fibre optic sensors, and different configurations such as material properties and location of the fibre and properties of the surrounding environment. To support this requirement, and the subject of this Expression of Interest, the Authority is looking for information about models that have been developed for submarine fibre optic based sensing that could be used, or developed, to quantify performance when used for acoustic monitoring of the underwater environment or the measurement of acoustically-relevant properties of the underwater environment such as temperature, salinity and pressure. MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN ATTACHED DOCUMENT
Notes More details are available on request if required. The model should calculate the response of one or more fibre optic sensors to an exterior measurand (temperature, salinity, pressure and/or acoustic) in an underwater environment. The model should represent the physical processes that are involved in each stage of the sensor measurement and could be at low, medium, or high fidelity and could describe some or all of the elements of the physical system. However, it is important for all models to include some of the dependency on different properties, e.g. fibre coatings, environment types, fibre material properties etc. From the model output, it should be possible to calculate performance metrics, such as: • Noise floor (equivalent to sensitivity or minimum detectable signal, response of sensor with no external stimuli) • Dynamic range (maximum level of signal) that will give an uncorrupted response • Frequency response (the response of the sensor system as a function of frequency, including frequency resolution) • Spatial resolution (the shortest distance between which localised signals can be resolved) • Temporal resolution • Latency, accuracy, resolution, precision • Other Interdependencies between key parameters and performance The model would be used by MOD and other parts of Government only but it is expected that the model outputs could be shared with international partners and industry/academia for which the information would be controlled by data management agreements and contract arrangements.
