The distribution system in power units is used to provide protected power lines to all satellite units. For heritage reasons and simplicity, the protection is implemented by means of a MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor) operating in the linear region. That gives place to very high dissipation in the MOSFET, which needs access to a good thermal path toevacuate the heat. Moreover, it heats up very quickly and the maximum current limitation time is limited to a few milliseconds. Switch mode LCLs instead don't operate in the linear region. They control the current by chopping it and then filtering. The classic MOSFET technology was not a practical solution considering that the switching frequency was low, and the filter sizewas large. However, the new GaN switches allow for a switching frequency in the order of MHz. Thus, the filter size is reduced, and the concept becomes feasible. Switched LCLs have very low dissipation and hence, don't need access to good thermal paths. Therefore, SMD (Surface Mounted Device)GaN switches can be placed anywhere in the PCB (printed circuit board). It is possible then to build a module filled up with switched LCLs based on SMDtechnology, increasing the density. The current capability multiplies by one order of magnitude, which means that thesame GaN switch can be used forall module LCLs. If a digital configuration system is implemented, the same module can be used for all possible applications since the digital system willconfigure each outlet to limit at the desired current level. The objective of this activity is to develop a module for a power unit where the maximum number of switched LCLs are placed. The concept is to maximisethe available space to increase the density of the module. All LCLs shall be identical and shall include a basic digital communication bus so that its currentlimitation level and trip-off time can be configured through the bus.The following tasks are foreseen in the frame of this activity: Preliminary design of the high frequency LCL concept. Selection of components to achieve high frequency switching capability. Worst case analysis of the highest switching frequency possible. Detailed design of the switchedLCL. Manufacturing of an engineering model (EM) of a module with at least16 LCLs. Test of the electrical and thermal performance of the EM.NOTE: This activity is currently in the GSTP Work Plan but will only be implemented after confirmation of financial support from Delegations. The final list of participating states will be known at tender issue.Read more
