Expression of Interest are invited for Identification of complementary improvements to the Apopa bypass

El Salvador-s road network supports the country-s logistics system and is largely utilized for trading, including the export of agricultural and manufacturing products to local, regional, and international markets. However, the country´s road network has several bottlenecks, and several key Projects, such as the Apopa logistics node, have been identified to address them.

Many of the sector-s challenges are concentrated in the Apopa logistics node (located in the northern part of MASS). While the urban area of Apopa has benefited from economic development, several precarious neighborhoods on its outskirts have been severely affected by the country-s security situation over the past two decades and suffer from high rates of poverty and marginalization. Apopa is crossed by CA-04 (known as Carretera Troncal del Norte), a north-south-oriented regional road on which the Interoceanic Corridor—C5 is based, and the east-west Gold Highway (La carretera de Oro, SAL38), which is part of the Guatemala-El Salvador corridor. This location has contributed to a population surge and a spike in traffic and congestion: around 26, 000 vehicles transit daily through Apopa-s city center. As a result of this traffic, the average IRI for this section of road in 2022 was measured to be poor at 3.86. The nonmotorized and public transport infrastructure is poor and poses serious road safety problems. Apopa is also close to two rivers at high risk of flooding and has complex geomorphic terrain with high incidence of landslides.
