Tenders are invited for Improving the understanding of lithium extraction impact on water resources in Salta; Argentina.
This consulting assignment will cover the impact of brine and water extraction rates on the boundary conditions of the salt flat; and the magnitude of freshwater use in lithium brine operations in a selected basin in the Salta region. The consultant will develop; calibrate; and validate a geohydrological model and carry out simulations to produce hydrological baseline assessments and a precise water balance representing the complete system. The focus should be on reducing uncertainty in hydrologic conditions; which lithium brine extraction companies have used on their environmental impact statements. A robust modelling will provide an enhanced understanding on how lithium mining operations will impact brine and freshwater extraction to the surface disruption associated with evaporation ponds; spent brine infiltration; and other landscape modifications. A key relevant aspect is the case that there are (or will be) cumulative and synergistic impacts produced by projects located in the same salt flat. Hence the need to increase the certainty and knowledge for the regulators to make decisions based on sound science and understanding of the dynamics of water flow and connectivity between the brine-to-freshwater area of the aquifer at the basin level considering impacts of all interventions impacting the water balances.
