Lead abatement is an activity designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Abatement is sometimes ordered by a state or local government and can involve specialized techniques not typical of most residential contractors. The EPA requires individuals and firms who perform abatement projects in pre-1978 target housing and child-occupied facilities to be certified and follow specific work practices. The Lead Abatement Supervisor and Worker Training Provider will work together with City of St. Pete (CSP) program staff, and partners of the Healthy Homes Community Coalition (HHCC), to provide equitable opportunities for contractors and community members to be trained and certified in an EPA approved Lead Abatement Supervisor or Lead Abatement Worker course. Our goal is to have a minimum seventy-five (75) individuals participate in the EPA-s Lead Abatement Supervisor or Worker Training and have at least five (5) new contractors register with the City of St. Pete as a provider for lead control and abatement services. The City will collaborate with various local vocational training and workforce development programs, educational partners, general contractors, and construction professionals to recruit individuals interested in lead hazard training and become certified lead abatement professionals through approved courses from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Lead Reduction Program will promote these training opportunities through targeted community outreach to include marketing, social media promotions, engagement with general contractors and community partners to target Small Business Enterprises and ensure equity in procurement for all members of our community who want to do business with the City of St. Petersburg.Trainings will be offered at least quarterly until the end of the project performance period (November 1, 2026).
