BACKGROUNDInvestingin Fragile and Conflict-affected Situations (FCS) and low-income IDA countriesin Africa presents significant challenges for IFC, primarily due to thecharacteristics of local corporates. The investment landscape in these Africanmarkets is complex and fraught with unique difficulties, such as transactions beingtypically smaller, more costly, and requiring longer periods to complete.Limited understanding of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)international best practices compared to host country laws, as well as thewillingness of sponsors to allocate budget and resources to improve theirpractices, pose significant barriers to investors. Issues with data reliabilityand accessibility introduce integrity due diligence and reputational risks.These challenges make it difficult to find committed sponsors who adhere to thebusiness and ESG standards required by private sector investors. AboutFCS AfricaTheIFC-s FCS Africa unit is dedicated to bolstering private sector development in FCSacross Africa. This is achieved by providing the additional resources andexpertise necessary to enhance the capabilities of upstream, advisory, andinvestment teams, thereby enabling more responsible and sustainable investmentsin challenging markets.
