The Dutch Ministry of Defence (NL MOD) is investigating various solutions in order to achieve a reduction of the dependency on fossil fuels in line with the DEOS1, the Defence Energy and Environment Strategy. This reduction should be 20 percent in 2030 running up to 70 percent in 2050, with respect to 2010. This year, in the Agenda for Sustainability Implementation2, the target for 2030 has been enhanced to the adoption of 30% renewable fuel per fuel type consumed by the NL MOD. To contribute to these goals, the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNNL) needs to change to alternative energy carriers and power systems, starting with the replacement for the Auxiliary Vessels. The RNLN operates ten Auxiliary Vessels, which operate mainly in the Netherlands (main port: Den Helder), North Sea, Norway and The Dutch Caribbean (Main port: Willemstad, curacao). These vessels can be divided into two vessel types; Five Seagoing Auxiliary Vessels with varying purposes and five Harbour Diving Vessels. Both vessel types are reaching their End Life of Type (ELOT). Therefore, replacement of these vessels is needed in the period 2026-2035. Preliminary feasibility studies and consortia like Green Maritime Methanol and Methanol as an Energy Step Towards Zero-Emission Dutch Shipping (MENENS) have shown that methanol is a solid candidate as future ship fuel. Therefore, the NL MOD has decided that the replacement Auxiliary Vessels should run on green methanol. With the implementation of methanol on the Auxili...
