The Mars Sample Return - Earth Return Orbiter (ERO) is one of three European Space Agency (ESA) contributions to the NASA/JPL led Mars Sample Return Campaign, which aims to return soil and atmospheric samples from the Mars surface to Earth. As part of a preliminary assessment in the frame of the project “Mars Sample Return - Earth Return Orbiter Spacecraft” (“MSR-ERO”), Airbus Defence and Space SAS and ESA will be pleased to invite you to submit your best estimate for the subject Request For Information (RFI). As MSR-ERO prime contractor, Airbus Defence and Space SAS is assessing the possibility to develop a Grab and Release Unit to be embarked on MSR-ERO. The assessment may lead to one or several procurement actions at a later stage. This RFI covers the design, manufacture / assembly / integration, and qualification / acceptance of the MSR-ERO Grab and Release Unit COntainment Mechanism (“GRU-COM”). The main objectives of this RFI are to assesses potential technical solutions, identify key-technology drivers and associated risks, assess the schedule and price and identify potential suppliers and potential geographical return. The Grab and Release Unit COntainment Mechanism (“GRU-COM”) will have to provide the following elementaries mechanism functions at the GRU system: The GRU-COM is a deployable pushing platform going from a launch configuration (locked TBD) to a released configuration early in orbit, then later in life to a deployed configuration while pushing the OS via a pushing plate, then moving back to its original position.
