Tender Details

Fertiliser nitrogen (N) is a fundamental requirement of cropping systems in Australia, particularly for those systems with low and declining organic carbon and low N inputs from N fixation sources such as in the Esperance Port Zone. The net N balance of cropping systems is often negative (Norton and Elaina vander Mark, 2016) and many of these soils have experienced declining soil organic carbon and soil N mineralisation (Heenan et al., 1995). To address this problem, cropping systems will need to balance N inputs, exports and losses using the combined approaches of i) increasing soil organic carbon to increase soil N mineralisation ii) increasing biological sources of N fixation to reduce reliance on synthesis sources of N iii) improve fertiliser nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) to reduce the cost of production and iv) improved matching of inorganic N supply to crop demand. This investment focuses on the latter, of improved matching of crop N demand with inorganic N fertiliser. The N banking theory is based on a body of work conducted in the Eastern States of Australia. This theory is that growers can increase the amount of N available in the soil “bank” and it will remain available for the subsequent cropping phase. This approach has had limited investigation in the Western Region due to the lighter soil types, farming system and environment where it is thought that this N would be lost.
