Tenders are invited for Open Channel Model for Railway - Expro Plus.

Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) channel models are a key component in supporting development and validation of systems from Navigation to Telecom. Standard models provided by ITU-R are commonly used in testing and validation of system performances in the lab. Hybrid physical statistical models currently offer a better representation of reality for navigation (GNSS) applications; however, these models are not suitable for testing and validation of GNSS in railway applications as they do not capture the specificities of the railway environment. The lack of open, standardized models has resulted in numerous suboptimal bespoke adaptations of existing LMS models such as the ITU-R P.681 model (based on 2D basic shape elements). These adaptations do not use the latest channel model developments in terms of 3D representation of the environment and comprehensive use of physical-statistical modelling. Such adaptations not only have serious description and performance deficiencies, but are also not validated extensively, making it difficult to use them as a reference model for certification.A standardized railway-specific reference model with the latest 3D physical statistical principles is needed to support development and validation of safety-related GNSS applications for rail and to support certification activities (e.g., testing conformity of equipment). The objective of this activity is to develop an open channel model that accurately emulates the propagation phenomena of GNSS signals in a railway environment. This activity has links with the Sim4Rail TDE activity, which developed a simulation testbed for the TEC Navigation Lab using a channel model based on ITU-R P.681. Other channel models canbe supported via an open interface. Synergies also exist with activities in GSTP (Rx4RAIL and GREET) on development of railway GNSSreceivers for safety of life applications and a TDE activity on disruptive receiver technology for railway. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Review of existing models for multipath channel modelling;- Identification of missing elements in currentmodels and design of additional techniques to fill the gaps (related to the specificities of modelling the railway environment);- Implementation of the channel model software in an efficient manner; and- Measurement campaign (utilizing test data already obtained from the field) and analysis for consolidation and validation of the model design.Software shall be delivered under an ESA Software Community LicenceRead more
