Context and Background Africa, including South Africa, bears one of the heaviest diseaseburdens globally. However, despite this, it heavily relies on imports forpharmaceuticals, vaccines, and medical devices. The COVID-19 pandemic hasfurther exposed the limitations of the pharmaceutical industry on thecontinent. The health sector in Africa faced urgent shortages of crucialequipment and products due to disruptions in the supply chain during the peakof the pandemic. These limitations on international trade have directlyaffected the importation of APIs from countries like China and India, impactingthe availability of drug products in South Africa's healthcare system.Consequently, South Africa has recognized the need to prioritize localpharmaceutical manufacturing and export, hence the proposed project. The aim of this project is to perform a detailedexamination of the pharmaceutical and medical devices production sector inSouth Africa. The objective of the study is to assess SA-s competitiveness andpotential to grow in a number of subsectors and carve out a road map to scaleinvestment in those sectors.
