MombasaCity County is home to 1.2 million people (Kenya-s 2nd largest city)and is a major local and international tourist attraction. It contributes5.2% to the GDP (third after Nairobi and Kiambu in 2021). Over the last 20years, the population has grown exponentially (at about 2.5% yearly, above thenational average) without proper urban planning, exposing the area to hazards, particularly flooding and heat stress, and posing challenges to the naturalenvironment exacerbated by climate change and lack of metropolitan coordinationwith the neighboring urban areas in Kwale and Kilifi counties.The study willbuild on the Nature-Based Solutions Opportunity Scan (NBSOS) conducted forMombasa County by GFDRR at the World Bank and preliminary engagements withcounty representatives to further scope opportunities for NBS investments. Thispreparatory work has helped to identify key opportunities for protecting, restoring, and enhancing natural ecosystems to address some of the key risks facing thecity and has been used to inform the scope of work defined for this assignment.
