IFC/FCS Africa department hosts the Africa Fragility Initiative (AFI) and the Forced Displacement (FDP)Programs. The AFI is a 5-yearadvisory/upstream initiative aimed at supporting private sector developmentacross 32 fragile African countries. AFI aims to enable more private sectorinvestments in markets where the cost of doing business is high and wherenumerous operational challenges today inhibit private sector activity. It isintended to support IFC achieve its Capital Increase commitments in Fragile andConflict-Affected Situations (FCS). AFI has developed a specific approach toidentify high potential businesses or “Local Champions” in FCS countries tosupport IFC-s engagement with the domestic private sector. The FDP program aimsto achieve sustainable improvements in the economic livelihoods of forciblydisplaced persons (FDPs) and host communities in Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt andUganda. It does this by enhancingprivate sector activities and delivering investments supported by concessionalfinancing in refugee-hosting areas to address the market gaps and build opportunitiesthat benefit both host communities and FDPs/refugees. AFI and FDP proposes to utilize the IFC's Local Champions approach (“LCI”) to identify high potential domestic sponsors workingwith refugees and/or operating in refugee-hosting areas of Ethiopiaspecifically Somali, Gambella, Benishangul - Gumuz, and Afar regions of thecountry. These efforts aim to support the implementation of IFC-s countrystrategy in Ethiopia which focuses on proactively developing new investmentprojects, supporting public-private partnerships that promote economic growth, and mobilizing direct investments to key sectors of the economy, includingagribusiness, financial services, health and education, infrastructure, manufacturing, and tourism.
