Copernicus has been established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely informationservices to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security. To ensure the operational provision of Earth-Observation data, the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) includes today a series of seven space missions called 'Copernicus Sentinels', which are being developed by ESA. The Sentinel-6 mission has a specific focus on sea level rise measurements and sea state measurements. The successful implementation of long lead time adaptation measures to sea level rise are particularly important for Copernicus stakeholders. To address the needs of Copernicus Evolution, ESA will undertake several activities as part of the phase 0 study of the Sentinel-6 Next Generation (S6NG) mission. The aim of the S6NG mission is to provide enhanced continuity of the satellite altimetry data record created using measurements from the heritage reference missions. The S6NGmission is planned to extend this series into the 2035-2050s time frame by providing near-real-time measurements to operational users ofsea surface height, significant wave height, and wind speed. The S6NG mission will also provide enhanced continuity in its role as the reference mission for global and regional mean sea level, complying with new scientific user needs for climate research. The objective of this study is to develop a radar altimeter instrument concept for the S6NG mission. This concept will be developed to a phase 0 level and its outputs will be the inputs for the system study in ESA's Concurrent Design Facility (CDF), which will take placein Q2 2025. Pending reception of offers of good quality, the Agency intends to place two parallel contracts for this activity.
