The SBB power plant is a pumped memory and uses the gradient between Sihlsee and Lake Zurich. The facility was put into operation in the 1930s and then expanded in stages. After receiving the concession in 2023 for the further use of the water forces between Sihlsee and Zurichsee, the power plant is to be partially renewed and replaced parts of the company at the end of the technical life. As part of the Etzelwerk power plant renewal, SBB AG provides for partly replacing the drive water path and replacing three of the seven machine groups in the headquarters in Altendorf with new ones.
