The Gympie Region experienced intense rainfall events in January, February and May 2022 which led to extensive flooding resulting in damage to essential public assets. In response to this damage to essential public assets, Council successfully sought activation under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).In 2022 Cooloola BMX and the One Mile Sports Complex were fully submerged by floodwater. Sports undertaken at these sites include BMX racing, cricket, soccer, baseball, and other community-based events on an ad hoc basis. Gympie Regional Council was subsequently allocated funding to construct a new facility building adjacent to Cooloola BMX, and a new facility building at One Mile Sports Complex. Consultation with stakeholders was undertaken and their feedback has been incorporated into the design and construction of these two new facilities buildings.
