Rosalind Franklin Mission (Exm-Rfm): Invitation to Tender for the Egress Mock up Platform and Drop Test Model Structure

The Rosalind Franklin Mission represents the continuation of ESA-s ExoMars programme following the breakup of the inter-Agency agreement with Roscosmos. As such, it replaces the previous Rover & Surface Platform Mission. The main objectives of the Rosalind Franklin Mission are to safely land on the Mars surface, collect and analyse in situ a range of Martian surface and subsurface soil samples, and to demonstrate technologies for planetary exploration. The key elements of the ‘Rosalind Franklin- Rover are its advanced drilling system, coupled with a sophisticated on-board science laboratory, and its capability to move autonomously on a variety of terrains on Mars- surface for at least 218 sols (8 months). Sampling down to a depth of 2 metres significantly increases the probability to detect preserved signs of past or even present life. The analysis of soil geo-chemistry will provide a detailed characterisation of the environment and geological history, and possibly provide evidence for the presence of organic compounds. The ‘Rosalind Franklin- Rover will be placed on the surface of Mars by an Entry, Descent and Landing Module (EDLM). This module is the main new developmental element of the ExoMars-Rosalind Franklin mission and will require key contributions from European suppliers. The so-called “braking engines” will be provided by NASA as Customer Furnished Items (CFIs). Airbus Defence and Space Ltd is the Lead Contractor for the Landing Platform Mechanical Thermal and Propulsion System (“MTPS”). As part of their scope of work, Airbus will release an Invitation to Tender (ITT) looking for a supplier to provide the Egress Mock Up Platform and Drop Test Model Structure • Egress Mock Up Platform: Part of the Egress Mock Up Model, the Egress Mock-Up platform consists of a simple non flight GSE mounting table with legs that can be manually adjusted in height (to simulate different stability conditions of the Landing Platform on Mars surface). The following items will be integrated by Airbus onto the Platform: a flight representative pair of ramps including guiderails and grids, and a flight representative Rover Pallet together with the pallet guides and friction grid. • Drop Test Model Structure: Part of the Landing Platform Drop Test Model which consists of a 1:1 model in terms of geometry - however scaled in terms of mass (for Martian gravity) - and will be used to support the verification of the Landing System of the RFM Landing Module; the Drop Test Model Structure consists of the non-flight GSE structure onto which Flight representative Landing Legs will be fitted.Read more
