"BC Sans"'Fecal contamination of marine shellfish harvest sitesis an important public health, food security, and economic problem in British Columbia (BC). Consumption of shellfish contaminated with fecal pathogens has caused significant human illness in BC, and subsequent closures of harvest sites have been associated with substantial cultural and economic consequences. Although marine waters may be contaminated with feces from different sources, including humans, livestock, and wildlife, shellfish harvestsites in BC are closed without identification of the fecal source. Instead, contamination is monitored via the presence and concentration of bacteriawhich indicate whether feces is present. Because these indicator bacteria are present in humans and many animals, they cannot be used to identify where the feces came from. Without this information, regulators cannot take action to mitigate fecal sources. As a result, these sources remain unaddressed and may continue to contaminate the site leading to protracted human health risks and prolonged cultural and economic consequences. /style="font-family:"BC Sans""The overall objective of GEMSTONE is to evaluate whether we can identify the sources of fecal contamination atmarine shellfish harvest sites in BC.
