The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLG) is responsible for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in Ireland. The Skelligs are a nationally and internationally important site for the natural and cultural heritage. Skellig Michael is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Skellig Michael, together with Little Skellig, was designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) given the islands- importance for breeding seabirds. The Skelligs are nationally recognised for their ornithological significance as a Statutory Nature Reserve. Skellig Michael-s famous Christian monastery was founded at some point between the 6th and 8th centuries. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLG) is the State body (and within the Department, the National Monuments Service (NMS) and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)) responsible for policy relating to the built and natural heritage of the site. The Office of Public Works (OPW) is responsible for the on the ground management of the site. These organisations liaise to provide co-ordinated management of the island-s built and natural heritage. A programme of work is typically scheduled before the start of each visitor season. Works generally include cultural preservation works, structural repairs as well as maintenance of paths and steps, accommodation quarters, solar panels, etc.
