Studies to monitor the success of fixed predation protection fences based on the breeding success of meadow birds in the Katinger Watt Eiderdamm areas, Beltringharder Koog and Dithmarscher Speicherkoog
For several decades, meadow bird populations have shown declining trends. Main cause of RThe decline in stocks is fundamentally due to the extensive landscape changes resulting from intensification of land use. Low, non-sustaining reproduction rates were identified as a key demographic factor. The main reason for this is increasing losses of eggsn and chicks by ground predators. Mobile and fixed electric fences have therefore been used for a long time as a management measure to ensure the hatching success of ground-nesting birds such as: E.g. lapwings, curlews and black-tailed godwits.
In the last three years (2021 to 2023) in threeIn various areas - Beltringharder Koog, Katinger Watt, Dithmarscher Speicherkoog-Nord - permanent predation protection fences were built on state-owned land. The aim of these measures is to ensure that the areas that are classified as EU bird protection regulations due to the nationally important breeding bird populations that occur theree areas are shown to increase the breeding success of the species by reducing predation.
Even if the basic benefit of predation protection fences for protection against ground predators has been documented many times and, in particular, a positive effect on the hatching success of meadow birds has been proven, ...
