As one of 18 centers in the Helmholtz Association, the HZB employs around 1, 100 people - around 800 of them in Berlin-Wannsee and 300 in Berlin-Adlershof - and has a total budget of around 110 million euros. The HZB works closely with the universities and technical colleges in Berlin-Brandenburg.
For research on the structure and function of matter, the HZB operates a large-scale scientific device: the electron storage ring BESSY II, which generates highly brilliant synchrotron radiation from the terahertz to the x-ray range. The facility is used to research der matter and has highly specialized sample environments, i.e. H. Here experiments can be carried out under the most demanding conditions (high magnetic fields, low temperatures, high pressures). The further development of this unique instrument is one of the main tasks of the Zentrums.
The realization of a sustainable energy supply is a central, pressing issue of this decade. Research is faced with the challenge of developing sustainable approaches to solving the energy question.

The SPEEM group operates in the experimental hall at the UE49 PGMa/ Column 9.2 a short-pulse laser with frequency multiplication and pulse picker to investigate dynamic processes in nanostructures and thin-film materials. As part of the redesign of the experimental areas at UE49 and the construction of the "Near Ambient Pressure PEEM", the existing SPEE...
