The Helmholtz Center Berlin (HZB) works with two main focuses: On the one hand, the researchers there are dedicated to materials and storage methods for energy conversion, such as solar cells, batteries and catalysts. This is an area of ​​research that is crucial to the success of the energy transitionis of great importance. On the other hand, the HZB and its 1, 100 employees develop accelerator concepts and instruments for research with light. The most important instrument is BESSY II: This synchrotron radiation source enables a look into the internal structure of a wide variety of objectsresearch objects such as viruses, bacteria, materials or meteorites. Every year, 3, 000 researchers from 28 countries use BESSY II as visiting scientists. Theres HZB operates three beamlines for macromolecular crystallography at the BESSY II facility. On a beamline, BL14.1, the X-ray beam guidance system is being fundamentally renovated in order to increase the photon flux on the crystalline sample.
