Offshore wind energy will play a large role in decarbonizing the Dutch energy supply. However, large scale offshore wind development may come at a price; as more wind farms are added, the clustering effect of the wind farms has a distorting effect on meteorology. This results in lower yields, as wind energy is removed upwind from a respective wind farm. The Dutch government has formulated their ambition for an acceleration in offshore wind energy development in order to decarbonize the energy supply. To meet this ambition, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy introduced a roadmap towards about 21 GW around 2030. In this roadmap, specific areas are designated for offshore wind farm development in the upcoming years. However, to estimate the energy production in 2030, wake effects should be taken into account. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of cluster (far) wakes on energy yield in 2030.
