Tenders are invited for Wideband Digital Back-End for Microwave Radiometers Enabling Rfi Detection and Digital Beamforming - Expro Plus
Digital back-ends on-board processing units have become a key element of microwave radiometers for earth observation, thanks to their capability of carrying out critical functions such as digital channelisation, detection and radio frequency interference mitigation and processing, alleviating as well the needs of high data rates transfers to ground. Future microwave radiometers will also require new functions such as on-board digital beamforming, enabling new observations (as required for Cryorad), with better radiometricperformance and coverage reconfigurability, among others, as proposed and envisaged for candidate earth explorers missions and European meteorological mission.Current and future microwave radiometers need to be robust against the uncertainties related to the radio frequency environment (i.e. radio frequency interference), and to be capable of adapting to the associated evolutions. For example, recently proposed microwave radiometers (e.g. Cryorad) require the on-board processing of very wideband signals (reaching aggregated multi-channel bandwidth of tens of GHz), the detection of radio frequency interference at very high spectral resolution (at kHz-MHz level), as well as the application of digital beamforming for beam-shaping, and beam agility. The combination of these functionsrepresent a challenge from a technological point of view and this activity aims at defining and developing the digital signal processing functions of very wideband multipurpose digital back-ends for future microwave radiometers, demonstrating the critical functions and performance. This activity will develop, implement and verify the digital processing functions and verify them in a representative HW test-bed.This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Requirement consolidation- Digital back-end definition- Development and verification of FPGA "Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description- Language" (HDL) code- Implementation of HDL signal processing functions in a test-bed with representative HW- Functional and performance verification
